President William Ruto has renewed Kenya’s call for equitable and permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, saying the continent should have a meaningful role in decisions on global peace and security.

Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on September 23, Ruto noted Africa has 54 countries and more than a quarter of the General Assembly, yet has no permanent seat on the 15-member Security Council.

The Council currently has five permanent members: the US, China, Russia, France and the UK.

Ruto also called for changes to the global financial system, arguing that developing countries continue to face high borrowing costs while debt payments consume money needed for development.

He urged greater access to affordable long-term capital, guarantees and risk-sharing mechanisms.

“Africa does not seek charity or special treatment. We seek a fair opportunity and a meaningful voice in shaping our common future.” said President Ruto.

The push comes as UN member states continue discussions on Security Council reform, including the long-standing African demand for permanent representation.
