The National Infrastructure Fund says it is seeking to mobilise private capital for major projects, including airports, energy infrastructure and a proposed oil refinery in Lamu, as it navigates legal uncertainty over part of its initial funding.

Kenya’s National Infrastructure Fund (NIF) is positioning itself as an alternative financing vehicle for major infrastructure projects, with its founding chief executive, Dr. James Mworia, saying the fund intends to attract domestic and international investors rather than rely primarily on government borrowing.

In an interview with Sable, Dr. Mworia said the fund’s central objective is to accelerate infrastructure development while easing pressure on the national budget, which faces competing demands from public spending and debt servicing.

Kenya needs more investment in highways, electricity generation, ports and airports to support economic growth. However, funding these projects directly through the Treasury could increase borrowing requirements at a time when the government is seeking to contain its fiscal deficit.
